  • 3 tablespoons 2% milk For moisture in the topping
  • 1 large egg Helps bind the topping
Optional
  • 1 serving vanilla ice cream or whipped cream For serving

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large bowl, mix the sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, and cloves. Then add the sliced apples and toss until they are well coated.
Assemble
  1. Spread the coated apples in a greased 8-inch square baking dish. Dot the top with the cold butter.
Make the Topping
  1. In another bowl, combine the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Work in the shortening until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk together the milk and egg. Stir this mixture into the dry ingredients just until combined. Do not overmix.
Bake
  1. Drop spoonfuls of the batter over the apples, leaving small gaps for steam to escape. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the topping is golden brown and filling is bubbling.
Serve
  1. Serve warm, optionally with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

For the best texture, use medium slices of apples and keep gaps between biscuit batter for better baking. Avoid freezing for best results.
