Preparation
- Wash the oranges well, and then cut them into slices. Keep a few slices aside for garnish at the end.
- Add the wine, cinnamon sticks, orange slices, cloves, and sugar to a pot. If desired, add the rum, cardamom, and star anise too. Stir gently.
Cooking
- Cover the pot and heat it on low for about 30 minutes for a milder drink, or up to 1 hour for a stronger flavor. Stir occasionally, avoiding boiling the mixture.
- Taste the Glühwein after it has warmed. If more sweetness is needed, stir in a little extra sugar gradually.
Serving
- Strain out the spices and orange slices, or carefully ladle the wine into mugs. Serve hot, adding an orange slice and a cinnamon stick to each mug for garnish.
Storing
- Let leftovers cool, then store in a glass jar or covered pot in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It can be frozen for up to 2 months.
Notes
To prevent mistakes: Do not let the Glühwein boil, taste before adding more sugar, and be careful not to over-simmer the spices. Add garnishes right before serving for the best presentation.
