Ingredients

Base Ingredients
  • 2 large yellow onions, thinly sliced
  • 2 large shallots, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
Seasonings
  • 1 teaspoon kosher salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
Creamy Base
  • 1 cup sour cream, plus more if needed
  • ¼ cup mayonnaise
  • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
Garnish
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons thinly sliced green onions (green parts only)

Method

Soften the Onions
  1. Heat the butter and olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat. Add the onions and shallots, then cook for 5 to 8 minutes, stirring now and then, until they soften and turn translucent.
Caramelize Slowly
  1. Stir in the salt, then turn the heat down to medium-low. Keep cooking for 25 to 35 minutes more, stirring as needed so nothing scorches.
Season and Cool
  1. Stir in the black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder, then cook for 1 minute. Remove from heat and let the onions cool completely.
Mix the Creamy Base
  1. In a mixing bowl, stir together the sour cream, mayonnaise, softened cream cheese, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
Fold Together and Chill
  1. Fold the cooled onions into the creamy base until well combined. Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving.
