  • 3 pieces Honeycrisp apples, peeled and medium-diced (about 3 cups) Adds sweetness and a juicy texture.
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar Can substitute with light brown sugar for a richer taste.
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
For the topping
  • 1 box yellow cake mix, dry and unmixed (425 g / 15.25 oz) Can substitute with white cake mix.
  • 1 cup butter, melted (2 sticks, 225 g) Could use salted butter but adjust salt accordingly.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a 9x13-inch oven-safe dish.
  2. Peel and dice the apples, then spread them evenly in the baking dish.
  3. Sprinkle the sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt over the apples. Toss gently and re-spread in an even layer.
Assembly and Baking
  1. Scatter the dry yellow cake mix over the apples without stirring.
  2. Pour the melted butter evenly over the top, ensuring coverage of the dry mix.
  3. Bake for 45 to 50 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the apples are tender.
  4. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For best results, do not skip the even apple layering, and resist stirring after adding the cake mix and butter. Store in the refrigerator for up to 4 days or freeze for up to 2 months.
