Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 12 count mozzarella string cheese sticks, unwrapped Use firm cheese for best results.
  • 12 count thick pretzel rods Thick rods provide a sturdy handle.
  • 24 count chive stalks or thin scallion greens, cut into 3-inch pieces These serve as broom bristles.
  • 1 string kitchen twine or thin strips of green onion For tying the broomsticks.
  • 1 serving ranch dressing Optional for dipping.

Method

Preparation
  1. Unwrap all 12 mozzarella string cheese sticks and keep them chilled until you are ready to work.
  2. Gently peel or shred the bottom two-thirds of each cheese stick lengthwise into thin strands, leaving the top third intact.
Assembly
  1. Insert a pretzel rod into the unshredded top portion of each cheese stick, pushing it in about 1 inch.
  2. Fan out the shredded cheese strands around the base with your fingers to resemble broom bristles.
  3. Tuck 2 to 3 pieces of chive or scallion greens among the cheese strands for extra texture.
  4. If desired, tie a strip of green onion or kitchen twine around the junction of the shredded and intact cheese.
  5. Arrange the finished broomsticks upright in a glass or platter and serve.

Notes

For best results, assemble near serving time. Store assembled broomsticks in the refrigerator for up to 1 day. Freezing is not recommended.
