Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 16 oz whole water chestnuts, drained Choose firm and well-drained water chestnuts.
  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce Can substitute with low-sodium soy sauce.
  • 1/2 cup ketchup Chili sauce can be used for a bolder flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder Can substitute with garlic onion seasoning.
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1 lb regular-cut bacon, cut into thirds Turkey bacon can be used as a leaner option.
  • toothpicks Soak in water to prevent burning.

Method

Preparation
  1. Soak the toothpicks in water for 15 to 20 minutes to prevent burning.
  2. Combine soy sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder in a bowl until smooth to create the glaze.
  3. Add drained water chestnuts to the sauce, tossing to coat. Marinate for at least 30 minutes, up to 2 hours.
Baking
  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a half-size sheet pan with foil and place a wire rack on top, sprayed with nonstick spray.
  2. Wrap each water chestnut in a piece of bacon and secure with a soaked toothpick, placing them on the rack as you go.
  3. Bake for 20 minutes, then brush with reserved sauce. Return to oven for about 10 more minutes, until bacon is crisp.
  4. Let cool for a few minutes before serving hot.
Storage
  1. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.
  2. For freezing, arrange in a single layer, then transfer to a freezer-safe container. Use within 2 months.
  3. Reheat in a skillet, microwave, or oven for best results.

Notes

For best texture, do not skip the marinating step. Avoid overbaking to keep the bacon from drying out. Pair with fresh sides to balance the rich flavors.
