Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1.5 pounds ground beef Lean or extra-lean recommended.
  • 4 cups mashed potatoes
  • 1 cup frozen peas and carrots You can use your favorite mixed vegetables.
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup beef broth Chicken broth can be substituted.
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Rectangular crackers for tombstones Use gluten-free if needed.
  • Black gel icing For decorating the tombstones.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a large skillet, brown the ground beef along with the diced onion over medium heat for about six minutes. Break apart the meat while cooking.
  2. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for an additional minute until fragrant. Stir in the tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, beef broth, and frozen peas and carrots. Let it simmer gently for about ten minutes.
Assembly & Baking
  1. Pour the beef filling into a baking dish, spreading it evenly. Spread the creamy mashed potatoes on top of the beef mixture, ensuring an even covering.
  2. Place the baking dish in your preheated oven and bake for 25 to 30 minutes until the top is golden and the filling is bubbly.
Garnishing
  1. Remove the Shepherd's Pie from the oven and let it cool slightly. Use black gel icing to write 'RIP' on the rectangular crackers. Press the crackers into the mashed potatoes to create a graveyard scene before serving.
