Ingredients
Method
Preparation
- Pat the brisket completely dry with paper towels.
- Mix the kosher salt, smoked paprika, garlic powder, onion powder, and black pepper in a small bowl. Rub the spice mix all over the brisket so it is well coated.
Searing
- Heat the vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat until it shimmers.
- Sear the brisket for 4 to 5 minutes per side until it is deeply browned. Then transfer the brisket to the slow cooker.
Cooking
- Place the sliced onion and smashed garlic around the brisket in the slow cooker.
- In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour the mixture over the brisket.
- Cover and cook on LOW for 8 to 9 hours or HIGH for 5 to 6 hours until fork-tender.
Finishing Touches
- Transfer the brisket to a cutting board and let it rest for 10 minutes before shredding it with two forks.
- Strain the cooking liquid into a saucepan, skim off excess fat, and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes until slightly thickened.
- Return the shredded brisket to the slow cooker and toss it with about 1 cup of the reduced sauce.
- Toast the buns if desired, then pile on the brisket, add coleslaw and pickles, and finish with extra barbecue sauce.
