Ingredients

For the Cocktail
  • 1 oz gin Choose a gin you enjoy; London dry gin offers a crisp bite.
  • 1 oz sweet vermouth (vermouth rosso) Can be swapped for a richer amaro-style aperitif.
  • 1 oz Campari Can be substituted for another red bitter aperitif.
  • Ice ice, for stirring Use plenty of ice for stirring to keep the drink cold.
  • 1 large ice cube Use a large ice cube in the glass to minimize dilution.
  • 1 large strip orange peel Optional: cut into a bat or pumpkin shape for Halloween.

Method

Preparation
  1. Chill the glass by placing a large ice cube in a rocks glass and setting it aside.
  2. Fill a mixing glass with ice and add the gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari. Stir for about 15 seconds until very cold.
  3. Strain the cocktail over the large ice cube in the rocks glass.
  4. Express the orange peel over the drink and drop it in as a garnish.
  5. Serve the cocktail immediately while very cold.

Notes

This cocktail is best made fresh but can have the gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari mixed ahead of time and stored in the fridge for up to 2 days. Serve only to guests of legal drinking age.
