Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 3 medium medium apples, peeled and diced Use apples like Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, Fuji, or Braeburn for best results.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Freshly squeezed for best flavor.
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup Can substitute with honey if desired.
  • 2 tablespoons light brown sugar, packed Granulated sugar can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour Can be replaced with cornstarch for a thicker filling.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon Add a pinch of nutmeg or allspice for extra spice flavor.
  • 2 tablespoons water Add more if needed to prevent sticking.

Method

Preparation
  1. Peel and dice the apples into small, dime-sized pieces. Place them in a bowl and squeeze the lemon juice over them. Stir well to coat the apples.
  2. In a small bowl, mix the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon. Sprinkle this mixture over the apples and toss until evenly coated.
  3. Pour in the maple syrup and gently stir to keep the apples intact.
Cooking
  1. Place the coated apples in a medium saucepan and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. If the mixture starts to dry out, add 1 to 2 tablespoons of water.
  2. Cook until the apples are soft and the sauce looks glossy.
Cooling and Storage
  1. Remove the pan from the heat and let the filling cool before using it.
  2. Store cooled filling in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days or freeze for up to 3 months.

Notes

For best results, keep apple pieces small and even. Consider serving with vanilla ice cream, pancakes, or as a side to savory dishes like pork chops.
