Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 cups day-old bread, cubed A sturdy loaf is best, such as French baguette, sourdough, or Italian bread.
  • 2 apples, diced Fresh apples add sweetness and a little bite.
  • 1/2 cup walnuts, chopped Provides a lovely crunch.
  • 6 eggs Essential for creating the custard.
  • 2.5 cups milk Whole milk or dairy-free alternatives can be used.
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar Lightly sweetens the custard.
  • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon Adds warmth and flavor.
  • Caramel sauce, for drizzling Drizzle just before serving.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Grease a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or non-stick spray.
  2. In the greased baking dish, spread out the cubed day-old bread evenly. Scatter the diced apples and chopped walnuts over the bread.
  3. In a large bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon. Pour the custard mixture evenly over the layered bread, apples, and walnuts. Press down gently.
  4. Allow the dish to rest for about 15 minutes to let the custard soak into the bread.
Baking
  1. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes, or until the pudding is puffed, golden brown on top, and set in the center.
Serving
  1. Remove the bread pudding from the oven, cool slightly, and drizzle caramel sauce on top before serving warm.

Notes

For variety, feel free to substitute pears or peaches instead of apples, or swap walnuts for other nuts. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free bread. Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 4 days, or freeze for up to 2 months.
