Ingredients

For the pastry
  • 1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
  • 1 cup cherry pie filling
For the cream cheese layer
  • 4 oz cream cheese, softened
  • 3 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp almond extract
  • 1 egg beaten, for egg wash
For topping and glazing
  • sliced almonds, for topping
  • powdered sugar for glaze
  • milk for glaze

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F. On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet to smooth out any creases.
  2. Using a sharp knife, gently score a 1-inch border around the edges of the pastry, being careful not to cut all the way through.
Make the cream cheese mixture
  1. In a medium bowl, beat together the cream cheese, sugar, and almond extract until you achieve a smooth, creamy consistency.
  2. Spread this mixture evenly inside the scored border on the puff pastry.
Add cherry filling and almonds
  1. Spoon the cherry pie filling evenly over the cream cheese layer.
  2. Sprinkle sliced almonds on top.
Bake the pastry
  1. Brush the exposed border of the pastry with the beaten egg.
  2. Place the pastry on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and bake for 20 to 22 minutes until golden brown and puffed.
Prepare the glaze
  1. While the Danish bakes, whisk together powdered sugar and a little milk until the mixture forms a thin, smooth glaze.
  2. Once the pastry comes out of the oven, drizzle the glaze over the warm Danish.
Serve
  1. Cut the Danish pastry into slices and serve warm.
