Baked Cinnamon Applesauce

Ingredients
  

For the Baked Applesauce
  • 4 to 5 pounds apples, peeled, cored, and sliced A mix of sweet and tart apples for best flavor.
  • 1/2 to 3/4 cup water or apple cider Use apple cider for added sweetness.
  • 1/3 to 2/3 cup sugar or brown sugar, to taste Adjust sweetness based on apple variety.
  • 1 1/2 to 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon Add more if desired.
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Helps brighten the flavor.
  • 1 pinch salt
  • optional a tiny pinch of nutmeg or a splash of vanilla Optional for extra flavor.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. Place sliced apples in a large baking dish or Dutch oven.
  3. Add water or cider, sugar, cinnamon, lemon juice, and salt. Stir directly in the dish.
  4. Cover tightly with a lid or foil. Bake for 45 minutes, then stir.
  5. Continue baking for another 30 to 60 minutes, stirring once or twice, until apples are very soft.
  6. Mash apples with a potato masher for chunky sauce, or use an immersion blender for smoother sauce.
  7. Taste and adjust sweetness or cinnamon as needed.

Notes

This applesauce can be stored in the fridge for up to 5 to 7 days or frozen for up to 3 months. To reheat, warm gently on the stove or in the microwave.
