Ingredients
  

Main ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef Aim for an 80/20 blend for juiciness.
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 4 slices rye or sourdough bread
  • 4 slices cheese (Swiss or American) Can substitute with sharp cheddar or other cheeses.
  • 1 onion thinly sliced For caramelizing.
  • to taste salt and pepper Season beef appropriately.
  • Butter for frying To coat the skillet.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Combine the ground beef with Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper in a bowl. Mix gently and form into two patties.
Caramelizing Onions
  1. In a skillet over medium heat, melt some butter and add the sliced onions. Cook slowly while stirring occasionally for about 10-15 minutes until caramelized and golden.
Cooking Patties
  1. In the same skillet, cook the beef patties for 4-5 minutes on each side or until desired doneness, placing cheese on patties in the last minute to melt.
Assembling Sandwiches
  1. Butter one side of each bread slice. Layer cheese on the unbuttered side, followed by the beef patty and caramelized onions, then top with another slice of bread.
Grilling
  1. Grill the assembled sandwiches over medium heat in the skillet until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per side.
Serving
  1. Remove sandwiches from skillet, slice in half, and serve hot.

Notes

Leftover patty melts can be refrigerated for up to 3 days. For freezing, wrap tightly and store for up to 3 months. Reheat on stovetop for best results.
