Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 6 medium medium apples Choose firm, juicy varieties like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp.
  • 6 wooden sticks Alternatively, use sturdy skewers or lollipop sticks.
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup light corn syrup Can be substituted with honey or maple syrup.
  • 3/4 cup water
  • red food coloring Optional; can use beet juice as a natural color.
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon extract Optional; can substitute with vanilla extract.

Method

Preparation
  1. Wash and dry the apples thoroughly to remove any wax or residues. Insert a stick firmly into the top of each apple.
  2. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy cleanup after dipping.
Cooking the Syrup
  1. In a saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, and water. Cook over medium heat without stirring, using a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature until it reaches 300°F, the hard crack stage.
  2. Remove from heat and stir in red food coloring and cinnamon extract if desired.
Dipping and Setting
  1. Quickly dip each apple into the hot syrup, twirling to coat evenly. Be cautious as the syrup is very hot.
  2. Place the coated apples upright on the parchment paper to set for about 15 minutes until the caramel is firm.

Notes

Store candy apples at room temperature for up to 3 days. Avoid refrigerating to prevent the caramel from getting sticky. If needed, reheat gently in the microwave to soften hard caramel.
