Ingredients

Cocktail Base
  • 1 cube sugar cube or 1 teaspoon white granulated sugar Can substitute with 1/4 oz simple syrup.
  • 4 dashes Peychaud's bitters A key ingredient; aromatic bitters can be used in a pinch.
  • 2 oz rye whiskey Choose a good quality rye for best results.
  • 1 teaspoon absinthe Herbsaint can be used for a traditional touch.
  • 1 piece lemon peel Fresh is best; can substitute with orange peel.

Method

Preparation
  1. Fill an Old Fashioned glass with ice and cold water to chill it.
  2. In a shaker, muddle the sugar cube and Peychaud's bitters until the sugar dissolves.
  3. Add ice to the shaker, then pour in the rye whiskey.
  4. Dump out the ice water from the Old Fashioned glass and coat the inside with absinthe.
  5. Stir the whiskey mixture for about 10 seconds and then strain it into the prepared glass.
  6. Express the lemon peel over the drink and wipe the rim with it. Place it on top as a garnish.

Notes

Do not skip the chilling step to maintain the cocktail's temperature. Use a gentle hand with the absinthe to avoid overpowering flavors. Stir gently to avoid diluting the drink and always use fresh lemon peel for the best aroma.
