Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef 80/20 fat ratio recommended for moisture.
  • 1/2 cup onion, chopped
  • 1/2 cup green bell pepper, chopped Can be substituted with other bell peppers.
  • 1 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar Can substitute with honey or maple syrup.
  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Optional; can substitute with taco seasoning for a spicier kick.
  • Salt and pepper to taste Season after the beef mixture is ready.
  • 4 pieces hamburger buns Toast lightly if desired.

Method

Cooking
  1. In a large skillet over medium heat, add the pound of ground beef. Cook until it’s nicely browned, about 5-7 minutes. Stir occasionally to break up the meat into smaller pieces.
  2. Once the beef is browned, carefully drain any excess fat from the skillet. Add the chopped onions and bell peppers, and cook for about 3-4 minutes until they are tender.
  3. Stir in the ketchup, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Ensure everything is evenly incorporated.
  4. Season the mixture with a pinch of salt and pepper to taste, and allow it to simmer on low heat for about 10-15 minutes so the flavors can blend together.
  5. While the beef mixture simmers, prep your hamburger buns by toasting them lightly to avoid sogginess.
  6. Finally, scoop generous portions of the beef mixture onto each toasted hamburger bun, serve warm, and enjoy!

Notes

The recipe can be customized with ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option, or make it vegetarian by using mushrooms. Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
