Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 1 cup warm water (110°F) Ensure the water is warm but not hot.
  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (one standard packet) Use fresh yeast for best results.
  • 1 tsp granulated sugar Helps activate the yeast.
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour, spooned and leveled, plus more for shaping Add more flour if needed for shaping.
  • 1 tsp fine sea salt
  • 2 tbsp extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for brushing Replace with avocado oil or melted butter if needed.
Topping Ingredients
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp garlic powder Can substitute with garlic salt.
  • 1/4 cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese
  • marinara sauce, warmed, for dipping Serves well as a dip.

Method

Activate the Yeast
  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, yeast, and sugar. Let the mixture sit for 5 to 10 minutes until it looks foamy on top.
Make and Knead the Dough
  1. Add the flour, salt, and olive oil to the bowl. Stir with a wooden spoon until a shaggy dough forms.
  2. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for 8 to 10 minutes until it feels smooth and elastic.
Let the Dough Rise
  1. Place the dough in a greased bowl and cover it with plastic wrap. Let it rise in a warm spot for 45 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
Shape the Bone Breadsticks
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. Punch down the dough, divide it into 16 equal pieces, and roll each piece into a rope about 8 to 9 inches long.
  3. Snip small V-shaped notches along both ends and pinch the center slightly so each piece looks like a bone.
Add Topping and Bake
  1. Arrange the shaped breadsticks on the baking sheets with space between them.
  2. Brush each one with melted butter mixed with garlic powder, then sprinkle with Parmesan cheese.
  3. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes until golden brown, firm to the touch, and hollow sounding when tapped.
Serve and Enjoy
  1. Serve the breadsticks warm with marinara sauce for dipping.
