Ingredients
  

Cider Base
  • 8 cups fresh apple cider Look for 100% pure apple cider with no added sugars or preservatives.
  • 3 sticks cinnamon sticks Plus more for garnish.
  • 1 tbsp whole cloves
  • 2 pod star anise
  • 1 whole orange Sliced into rounds, plus more for garnish.
  • 2 tbsp brown sugar Packed, optional to taste.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Start by pouring the 8 cups of fresh apple cider into a large pot.
  2. Add the 3 cinnamon sticks, 1 tablespoon of whole cloves, 2 star anise pods, and the orange slices.
Simmering
  1. Place the pot on the stove over medium heat and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  2. Once simmering, reduce the heat to low and let it cook uncovered for about 25 to 30 minutes.
  3. Stir occasionally to help blend the spices and orange.
Tasting and Sweetening
  1. After simmering, taste the cider carefully.
  2. If you want a sweeter drink, stir in up to 2 tablespoons of packed brown sugar slowly, then taste again.
  3. Adjust the sweetness as needed to suit your preference.
Straining
  1. Using a fine mesh strainer, carefully strain out the whole spices and orange slices from the cider to ensure a clear drink.
Serving
  1. Ladle the hot cider into mugs.
  2. Garnish each cup with a fresh cinnamon stick and an additional orange slice, if desired.
Storage
  1. Serve your warm cider immediately for the best experience.
  2. If you have leftovers, refrigerate them in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
  3. When ready to drink again, reheat gently on the stove or microwave.

Notes

Be cautious not to boil the cider rapidly to avoid burnt flavors. Taste before adding brown sugar to balance sweetness. Strain carefully to avoid gritty texture.
