Ingredients

For the Bread Bowl
  • 1 round loaf 1 round bread loaf (for bowl) Try using a sourdough or whole grain loaf for added flavor.
For the Dip
  • 10 oz 10 oz frozen spinach (thawed, drained) Make sure to drain properly to avoid a watery dip.
  • 1 cup 1 cup sour cream Greek yogurt can be used as a lighter alternative.
  • 1 cup 1 cup mayonnaise You can substitute with avocado or vegan mayo for fewer calories.
  • 1 packet 1 packet vegetable soup mix Homemade herbs and spices can be used instead.
  • 8 oz 8 oz water chestnuts (diced) Diced bell peppers can be used as a substitute.
  • 3 pieces 3 green onions (sliced)
  • 1 drop black food coloring (optional) Can be replaced with dark olives or charcoal powder.
For Serving
  • tortilla chips Great for dipping alongside the dip and bread.

Method

Preparation
  1. Hollow Out the Bread Loaf: Use a serrated knife to carefully hollow out the round bread loaf, leaving sufficient bread around the edges to stabilize the dip.
  2. Prepare the Dip: In a mixing bowl, combine the thawed spinach, sour cream, mayonnaise, vegetable soup mix, water chestnuts, and sliced green onions. Stir until fully combined and smooth.
  3. Spoon Dip into Bread Bowl: Fill the hollowed-out bread bowl with the dip and smooth the top with a spatula.
  4. Chill the Dip: Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour to allow flavors to meld.
  5. Serve: Once chilled, serve with the reserved bread pieces, tortilla chips, and any additional vegetables or sides.

Notes

Serve soon after preparation to avoid sogginess of the bread. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days, or freeze for about 2 months. Reheat as necessary.
