Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 1/2 cups half-and-half or light cream Use fresh half-and-half or light cream.
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar Brown sugar adds a caramel note.
  • 3 tablespoons unsalted butter Melt into the mixture.
  • 2 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips Can substitute with dark or milk chocolate chips.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Add at the end for a balanced flavor.
Storage
  • Pint or half-pint Mason jars For storing the sauce.

Method

Preparation
  1. Set a medium saucepan over medium heat. Add the half-and-half and brown sugar, and stir until the sugar dissolves, heating until small bubbles form around the edges without boiling hard.
  2. Add the unsalted butter to the mixture. Stir until melted completely, then turn off the heat.
  3. Top the warm mixture with semi-sweet chocolate chips, letting them sit for 2 to 3 minutes to soften.
  4. Whisk the mixture until completely smooth and glossy, then stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Serve warm over ice cream or pour into clean Mason jars to cool and store.
  6. When cold, reheat gently on low power in the microwave or in simmering water to loosen.

Notes

Store in clean jars for up to 10 days in the refrigerator or freeze for up to 3 months. Can reheat and adjust consistency with milk or cream.
