Preparation
- Slice the hoagie roll lengthwise, but leave one side attached like a hinge.
- Gently pull out a little of the soft bread from the center if the roll is thick.
Mixing the Dressing
- Add the red wine vinegar, olive oil, oregano, salt, and pepper to a small jar.
- Shake it hard until the dressing looks blended and slightly thick.
Dressing the Lettuce
- Place the shredded iceberg lettuce in a small bowl and toss it with about one-third of the dressing.
Building the Sandwich
- Drizzle about one-third of the dressing over the bottom half of the roll.
- Layer on the ham, salami, and pepperoni, followed by optional capicola or prosciutto.
- Add provolone cheese on top of the meats.
- Top with thinly sliced onion, tomato, and hoagie spread or pepperoncini.
Finishing Touches
- Pile the dressed lettuce on top and drizzle with the remaining dressing.
- Close the sandwich, press it gently, and cut it in half to serve.
Notes
This sandwich is best eaten fresh. Store wrapped in the fridge for up to 1 day, keeping the lettuce and tomato separate until serving.
