Ingredients

For the crust
  • 1 Grandma's pie crust, or store-bought (for a 9-inch pie pan)
For the filling
  • 1 cup chopped semi-sweet chocolate, or chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 cup packed dark brown sugar
  • 1 cup dark corn syrup
  • 4 large eggs, lightly beaten
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 2 cups pecans, whole or chopped

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat the oven to 375°F. Roll out the pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Flute the edges as desired, then freeze the shell for at least 20 minutes while you prepare the filling.
Making the Filling
  1. In a large bowl, stir together the melted butter, dark brown sugar, and dark corn syrup until combined. Add the lightly beaten eggs and vanilla, then mix until the filling looks smooth and evenly blended.
Assembling the Pie
  1. Scatter the pecans over the bottom of the chilled pie crust. Sprinkle the chocolate evenly over the pecans. Pour the egg and sugar mixture over the top.
Baking
  1. Bake at 375°F for 15 minutes, then reduce the oven temperature to 350°F and continue baking for 35 to 40 minutes, until the center is almost set and still has a slight wobble.
Cooling and Serving
  1. Set the pie on a wire rack and let it cool completely. Refrigerate until serving.

Notes

For best results, chill the shaped crust, avoid excessive mixing of the filling, and check for a slight wobble in the pie before removing it from the oven. Allow to cool completely before slicing for clean cuts.
