  • 3 lbs Yukon Gold potatoes Or Russet potatoes for a softer texture.
  • 2 cups Diced ham Leftover holiday ham or deli ham.
  • 3 tbsp Butter For making the sauce.
  • 3 tbsp Flour Use gluten-free blend if needed.
  • 2.5 cups Whole milk 2 percent milk can be used.
  • 1 cup Chicken broth Adds flavor to the sauce.
  • 1 tsp Salt Adjust based on saltiness of ham.
  • 0.5 tsp Black pepper To taste.
  • 1 pinch Garlic powder Optional for flavor.
  • 1.5 cups Shredded cheddar cheese Can substitute with other cheeses.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  2. Slice the potatoes into thin coins, uniform in thickness for even baking.
  3. In a saucepan, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute. Slowly add milk and chicken broth while whisking until smooth and thickened.
  4. Add salt, pepper, and garlic powder to the sauce, then stir in cheese until melted.
Assembly
  1. Grease a 9x13 baking dish. Layer potatoes, ham, and sauce alternately, finishing with sauce on top.
Baking
  1. Cover with foil and bake for 45 minutes. Uncover and bake for an additional 20-30 minutes until potatoes are tender and top is golden.
Serving
  1. Let the casserole rest for 10-15 minutes before serving to allow it to set.

Notes

For a lighter version, use more broth and less milk. If you want a golden top, broil for 1-2 minutes at the end, watching closely to prevent burning.
