  • 6 cups peeled and diced apples Use a mix of sweet and tart varieties for best flavor.
  • 1 cup sugar Granulated sugar.
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar Packed brown sugar.
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice Fresh lemon juice.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

Preparation
  1. Start by peeling and dicing 6 cups of your chosen apples. Make sure to use a mix of sweet and tart varieties for the best flavor.
  2. Place the diced apples in the slow cooker. Next, add in 1 cup of sugar, 1/2 cup of brown sugar, and all your spices: 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, 1/2 teaspoon of nutmeg, and 1/4 teaspoon of allspice. Don’t forget to add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
  3. Using a large spoon, mix everything together in the slow cooker to ensure that all apple pieces are well-coated with the sugars and spices.
  4. Cover the slow cooker and set it on low heat. Let it cook for 6-8 hours, or until the apples are very soft, and the mixture has thickened to your liking.
  5. Once the apples are soft, use an immersion blender to puree the mixture until it’s smooth.
  6. If you prefer a thicker spread, leave the slow cooker uncovered and cook for an additional hour.
  7. Once it reaches your desired consistency, store the apple butter in clean jars in the refrigerator, or proceed to can it for longer shelf life.

Notes

Keep your homemade apple butter in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. For longer storage, freeze in airtight containers for up to 6 months. Reheat to enjoy.
