Ingredients

Main ingredients
  • 4 cups apple cider Fresh, unfiltered apple cider is preferable.
  • 2 oz dark rum Substitute with spiced rum for a different flavor.
  • 2 tbsp butter Use unsalted butter or a dairy-free alternative.
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar Can be substituted with maple syrup or honey.
Spices
  • 1 stick cinnamon Feel free to use ground cinnamon, but use it sparingly.
  • 3 pieces whole cloves Allspice can be used as a substitute.
  • 1 piece orange peel Can be replaced with lemon peel for a brighter flavor.

Method

Preparation
  1. Pour the apple cider into a medium-sized saucepan. Add the cinnamon stick and whole cloves. Heat over medium heat until the cider is warm, simmering gently for about 10 minutes.
  2. Carefully remove the cinnamon stick and cloves using a slotted spoon or fine mesh strainer.
  3. Stir in the brown sugar and butter until both are fully melted and combined into the cider.
  4. Remove from heat and stir in the dark rum until well combined.
  5. Pour the spiced cider into mugs, being careful not to fill them to the top.
  6. Twist the orange peel over each mug to release essential oils and drop in as a garnish. Serve warm.

Notes

This cider is best enjoyed fresh but can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. It can also be frozen for up to 2 months in an airtight container. To reheat, warm it gently on the stovetop or in the microwave.
